Method and apparatus for mapping sources and uses of consumer funds
Publication/Patent Number: US8255326B2 Publication Date: 2012-08-28 Application Number: 12/498,272 Filing Date: 2009-07-06 Inventor: Compiano, Craig   Assignee: The Western Union Company   IPC: G06Q30/00 Abstract: A bill-paying system includes a customer deposit account which receives periodic payroll deposits of an individual or a couple. A bill-paying service enrolls the individual or couple for a fee, and is authorized to transfer money from the deposit account to the accounts of various creditors. An originating depository financial institution, such as a bank, handles the transfers of money, and such transfers are preferably done electronically. The automated clearing house (ACH) network supports such electronic money transfers. The various bills and debts of the individual or couple come due at times that are asynchronous to their income structure. The bill-paying service is authorized to debit the deposit account for more than the basic minimums due the creditors each month. Such excess is used to accelerate the repayment of various loans and debts according to what particular application at that time will have the greatest long-term beneficial effect. Method and apparatus for preauthorizing electronic fund transfers without actual written authentication
Publication/Patent Number: US7440923B1 Publication Date: 2008-10-21 Application Number: 09/317,785 Filing Date: 1999-05-24 Inventor: Compiano, Craig M.   Assignee: The Western Union Company   IPC: G06Q40/00 Abstract: A method and apparatus for preauthorizing electronic fund transfers from a consumer's bank account without obtaining actual written authentication from the consumer is implemented in connection with a direct marketing strategy for a financial product which, in the presently preferred embodiment of the invention, is a mortgage acceleration program. The invention provides for the mailing of a solicitation to a consumer, i.e. a prospective customer, based upon such factors as mortgage data that the financial institution may posses concerning the consumer. The mailing includes an authorization and passcode which, in the presently preferred embodiment of the invention, is an ACH authorization and passcode. When the consumer receives the solicitation, he may decide to enroll in the mortgage acceleration program. The consumer places a telephone call to a telemarketing organization at a telephone number that accompanied the solicitation. The consumer provides the passcode to a representative of the telemarketing organization and the telemarketing organization attempts to verify the passcode. If the passcode is successfully verified, then the consumer is enrolled in the mortgage acceleration program. Thus, the invention provides a deceptively simple and specific implementation of the “similarly authenticated” requirement of the EFTA that is applicable to direct marketing solicitations made by, or on behalf of, financial institutions. That is, the passcode provided by the consumer meets the requirement of a “digital signature or other code.” Yet, the consumer is not required to provide an actual written signature, nor is the consumer required to use a computer or other electronic means to conclude the transaction. A method and apparatus for preauthorizing electronic fund transfers from a consumer's bank account without obtaining actual written authentication from the consumer is implemented in connection with a direct marketing strategy for a financial product which, in the presently ...More ...Less

Methods and apparatus for mapping sources and uses of consumer funds
Publication/Patent Number: US2004015438A1 Publication Date: 2004-01-22 Application Number: 10/336,671 Filing Date: 2003-01-02 Inventor: Compiano, Craig   Rogers, Michael W.   Grant, William R.   Assignee: First Data Corporation   IPC: G06F017/60 Abstract: The present invention provides exemplary bill paying service methods and systems. One such bill paying service method (1000) includes enrolling a subscriber (Step 1010) who is a debtor to a first creditor and who has authorized debits to be taken from a designated account. The designated account is adapted to periodically receive a payroll deposit on a first regular schedule that is over time in excess of a minimum payment on a first debt owed by the debtor to the first creditor. The designated account is periodically debited, and any funds obtained are used to credit a custody account (Step 1012). The first creditor is paid (Step 1016), on behalf of the debtor and from the custody account, on a second regular schedule that differs from the first regular schedule. Paying the first creditor occurs in an amount calculated for an accelerated repayment of the first debt (Step 1014). Such excess is used to accelerate the repayment of various loans and debts according to what particular application at that time will have the greatest long-term beneficial effect. The present invention provides exemplary bill paying service methods and systems.
