Abstract: A single-inductor DC-DC converter generates two DC output voltages at two capacitors. The converter selectively transfers energy from a battery to the inductor or from the inductor to a selected capacitor. While the converter is still settling, the converter is regulated based on only the more deficient DC output voltage. After the converter has already settled, the converter is regulated based on the common-mode voltage for both DC output voltages. By regulating the still-settling converter based on only the more deficient DC output voltage, instead of the common-mode voltage, even greater deficiencies in that already more-deficient DC output voltage are avoided. Abstract: A solar cell management system for increasing the efficiency and power output of a solar cell and methods for making and using the same. The management system provides an electric field across an individual solar cell, an array of solar cells configured as a panel, or a group of solar panels. The imposed electric field exerts a force on both the electrons and holes created by light incident on the solar cell and accelerates the electron-hole pairs towards the electrodes of the solar cell. Compared to conventional solar cells, these accelerated electron-hole pairs travel a shorter distance from creation (by incident optical radiation) and spend less time within the solar cell material, therefore the electron-hole pairs have a lower likelihood of recombining within the cells' semiconductor's material. This reduction in the electron-hole recombination rate results in an overall increase in the solar cells' efficiency and greater power output. Abstract: An energy storage device includes a device controller, an electrical energy converter, an energy storage medium and a power metering device. In a method of managing electrical power consumption by a group of the energy storage devices, a measured power level is output from the power metering device of each energy storage device. The power level represents a rate of electrical energy consumption by the electrical energy converter of the device. The measured power levels of each of the devices are communicated to a system controller using the device controllers. An aggregate power level is calculated based on the measured power levels, and is stored in memory using the system controller. In some embodiments, the aggregate power level is communicated to a remote location, such as an electrical power distribution system.
