Abstract: A method and system for securely verifying over an open network a transaction using a payment card requiring authorization, such as a PIN, to be used. The system utilizes a secure host system to establish two lines of communication between a merchant and a consumer device used by an individual using the payment card. The secure host system provides a verification interface that is presented to the consumer device, providing a means for the individual to provide verification information. The secure host system receives verification information from the consumer device, couples the verification information with card information supplied by a merchant for verification from a third party payment provider. Abstract: A bill-paying system includes a customer deposit account which receives periodic payroll deposits of an individual or a couple. A bill-paying service enrolls the individual or couple for a fee, and is authorized to transfer money from the deposit account to the accounts of various creditors. An originating depository financial institution, such as a bank, handles the transfers of money, and such transfers are preferably done electronically. The automated clearing house (ACH) network supports such electronic money transfers. The various bills and debts of the individual or couple come due at times that are asynchronous to their income structure. The bill-paying service is authorized to debit the deposit account for more than the basic minimums due the creditors each month. Such excess is used to accelerate the repayment of various loans and debts according to what particular application at that time will have the greatest long-term beneficial effect. Abstract: A system and method that allows for a group of individuals to easily contribute to the same gift card is disclosed. The gift card can be a traditional physical card or an electronic card. In one embodiment, an account administrator establishes a group enabled gift card account for self-consumption or for a specified gift recipient. The administrator engages potential group gift card contributors through various electronic communication mechanisms who can then add funds to the account. The contribution period may remain open based on criteria supplied by the administrator. Once the account is closed, the collected amount is transferred to a designated gift card and sent to the recipient. Abstract: A method is disclosed for indexing and querying XML documents stored in a relational database. A user is allowed to choose columns of a database table for storing XML data of a known structure. The user has to input one or more XML paths for indexed data. Each path is stored in a static index table. In response to the input of the user defined paths, at least one dynamic index table is created for each static index table. The dynamic index table is updated upon data being entered into the database table. When a user's query is intercepted, any XML expression part of the query is processed and converted into one or more rows in the static index table. A new query is generated against the dynamic indexing tables, using the values obtained from the static index table, and executed. The user's query is then rewritten by transforming the XML path part of the user's query expression into a format understood by the database query engine. Finally, after the rewritten query is executed, the result is returned to the user, together with any non-XML part of the user's query, executed by the database query engine.
