Abstract: A functional particle is manufactured by a method including an aggregating step, a depressurizing step, and a cooling step. In the aggregating step, the functional particle is obtained by flowing a mixed slurry containing a core particle and a shell particle through a coiled pipeline while heating the mixed slurry to a glass transition temperature or higher of the core particle, to deposit the shell particles on the surface of the core particle. In the depressurizing step, the grain size of the functional particle is controlled and the coarse particle is pulverized to make the grain size of the functional particles uniform. In the cooling step, re-aggregation of the functional particles with unified grain size is prevented. Abstract: The invention provides a novel array method for nucleic acid sequence detection with improved specificity which allows for detection of genetic variation, from simple SNPs (where the variation occurs at a fixed position and is of limited allelic number) to more complex sequence variation patterns (such as with multigene families or multiple genetic strains of an organism where the sequence variation between the individual members is neither fixed nor consistent). The array is comprised of short, synthetic oligonucleotide probes attached to a solid surface which are hybridized to single-stranded targets. Single stranded targets can be produced using a method that employs primers modified on the 5′ end to prohibit degradation by a 5′-exonuclease that is introduced to degrade the unprotected strand. The invention further provides for printing buffers/solutions for the immobilization of oligonucleotide probes to an array surface. The invention also provides hybridization and wash buffers and conditions to maximize hybridization specificity and signal intensity, and reduce hybridization times. Abstract: The present invention relates to tie-coat compositions for fouling-release paint systems. The invention provides a method of coating a substrate with a coating composition comprising at least two types of functional polysiloxane compounds selected from epoxy-functional polysiloxanes, amino-functional polysiloxanes, and particular adhesion promoting agents of the polysiloxane type. Abstract: A sorbent media protective device includes an enclosure having a gas inlet, gas outlet and a thin-film multilayer indicator. The thin-film multilayer indicator is proximate sorbent media that can sorb a vapor of interest flowing from the gas inlet towards the gas outlet. The indicator includes a porous detection layer whose optical thickness changes in the presence of the vapor, located between a semireflective layer and a reflective layer permeable to the vapor. Abstract: There is provided a stacked lithium secondary battery in which a plurality of cathode plates and a plurality of anode plates are alternatively facing each other, and its fabrication method. The method comprises adhering a plurality of anode plates to a portion of one surface of a separator onto which the anode plates are neighboring one another, adhering a plurality of cathode plates to a portion of the other surface of the separator onto which the cathode plates are neighboring one another, covering either the cathode or anode plates with the separator by folding the portion to which no electrode plate is adhered, successively folding the separator in a fixed one-direction along folding lines formed between the electrode plates to obtain a stacked body, and housing the obtained stacked body within a pouch, followed by injection of an electrolyte solution and packaging. The method simplifies the folding process by a fixed one-directional folding rather than a zig-zag folding, and reduces the scale of a facility required for the adhesion process by minimizing the length occupied by the electrode plates. Further, the separator can be tightly fastened such that the charge/discharge characteristics and cycle life of the battery can be enhanced, compared to a zig-zag folding. Abstract: Provided herein is a large immuno-sorbent surface area assay (ALISSA) for rapid and sensitive detection of toxin or enzyme activity. This assay is designed to capture a low number of toxin or enzyme molecules and to measure their intrinsic protease activity via conversion of a fluorogenic or luminescent substrate. The ALISSA is significantly faster and more sensitive than methods routinely utilized in the art.
